Pre-Wedding Rituals Explained: Haldi, Mehndi & Sangeet

The days before an Indian wedding are full of colour and meaning. Here is what the main pre-wedding functions celebrate.

Haldi

Family members apply a turmeric paste to the bride and groom for blessings, glow and good fortune. It is playful, intimate and usually held at home.

Mehndi

Intricate henna is applied to the bride and female guests. Tradition says the deeper the colour, the stronger the love β€” and it is a wonderful chance for the two families to mingle.

Sangeet

An evening of music and dance where both families perform, tease and celebrate together. A little rehearsal turns it into the most memorable night before the wedding.
